Starke currently serves as the president of Georgetown University’s Student Veterans Association.

(NEW YORK CITY) – Marine Corps veteran and FourBlock Campus Leader Cristine Starke has been awarded the 2017 Truman Scholarship for her exceptional record of leadership, public service, and academic achievement.

Out of 768 possible candidates, Starke was one of 62 students selected to become a 2017 Truman Scholar. The prestigious scholarship awards recipients $30,000, which Starke intends on using to pursue a master’s degree in international development.

Starke served as an Arabic linguist in the Marine Corps for five years. After transitioning back into civilian life, she enrolled at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Affairs, where she currently serves as president of the school’s Student Veterans Association.

Additionally, she serves as a FourBlock Campus Leader, giving back to other student veterans at Georgetown by educating them on the foundation’s Career Readiness Program.

“FourBlock is such a great community of mutual support, not only from industry leaders, but peers as well,” said Starke. “One’s success is a success for the cohort, and it’s clear that the FourBlock team is committed to a successful transition for every one of its service members.”

The Oregon native has held multiple public service roles since arriving at Georgetown in 2015; she’s researched religion and diplomacy in peacekeeping for an NGO, worked as a foreign service intern for the Spokesperson at the Department of State, an EducationUSA virtual advisor for Syrian college applicants at the Department of State, and a foreign service intern at the U.S. Embassy in Kosovo.

The FourBlock community continues to impress us, and we’re incredible proud of Cristine’s ever-growing list of accomplishments.
